Policy on Environmental Consideration

February 27, 2006
National Institutes of Natural Sciences

The National Institutes of Natural Sciences aims to further enrich our understanding of nature and contribute to the development of society through promoting liaison and cooperation between inter-university research institutes that undertake research in a wide range of fields of natural sciences such as space, materials, energy and life sciences.
We also have a sense of responsibility, as an entity that has constant contact with various natural activities of the earth and space, to contribute to the conservation of the environment through research in a wide range of fields of natural sciences.
One of the research projects which contribute to the conservation of the environment is research for the development of clean energy that does not emit carbon dioxide causing global warming. If this research is successful, such energy will be the new energy of the future, and by which we can gain the same benefit as the benefit the earth receives from the sun.
Likewise, research conducted to find out the way how living organisms live at a molecular level will lead to us finding a way to co-exist with various species on the earth through learning form living organisms in nature and utilizing our knowledge of living organisms.
Research in the molecular science field is basic research which may contribute to the effective use of energy and the development of new scientific technologies based on the principle of material cycles.
From these perspectives, we work aggressively to do the following:

  1. NINS has established an environmental management system which shall apply to its various activities, and implement, regularly inspect the status of implementation thereof, and review and continuously improve such system.
  2. NINS makes efforts to reduce the environmental burden which may arise from its activities.
  3. NINS complies with environmental laws and regulations, ordinances and agreements.
  4. In purchasing goods and services, NINS positively selects environmentally-friendly goods and services and promotes green procurement as much as possible in adherence with the spirit of the Act on Promotion of Procurement of Eco-Friendly Goods and Services by the State and Other Entities.
  5. NINS summarizes this Environmental Policy as well as other information concerning its environmental management system and environmental performance in an easy-to-understand manner, and discloses such information to the public.
  6. NINS endeavors to create a recycling-based society and cooperate with the measures taken for the creation of recycling-based society implemented by the State and local public entities.
